Healing Through Song: Free Postnatal Depression Support for Croydon Mums

A pioneering new programme offering vital support to new mothers experiencing postnatal depression is launching in Croydon this summer—and it’s all about the healing power of song.

Breathe Melodies for Mums, a group singing programme developed by social enterprise Breathe Arts Health Research, is coming to two locations in Croydon starting this June. The sessions are completely free and open to new mothers struggling with symptoms of postnatal depression or anxiety.

Behind this initiative is Croydon-born social entrepreneur Yvonne Farquharson, founder of Breathe. With a lifelong passion for combining the arts and health, Yvonne is bringing this award-winning programme back to her hometown to offer a safe and joyful space for mothers in need.

What Is Breathe Melodies for Mums?

It’s not your average baby music class. While babies are welcome, the focus is squarely on mothers. The sessions use group singing—no experience necessary—as a gentle, creative way to ease feelings of isolation, low mood, and anxiety that can affect new mums in the weeks and months after giving birth.

Songs from around the world are shared in a welcoming, non-judgmental space, led by professional singing leaders trained to work in healthcare settings. Participants describe the sessions as “a break of sun behind some black clouds” and “a little holiday” during an otherwise challenging time.

And it works: scientific research from the Royal College of Music and Imperial College London found that mothers who took part in the programme saw a 40% drop in postnatal depression symptoms, with nearly three-quarters no longer showing moderate to severe symptoms after 10 weeks.

📍 Where & When

Croydon mums can now join this life-enhancing programme at one of two local venues:

  • Stanley Arts, South Norwood
    Mondays, 10:30am–11:30am
From 2 June to 4 August

  • Woodlands Children’s Centre, South Croydon
    Fridays, 10:30am–11:30am
From 6 June to 8 August

Sessions run in 10-week blocks and registration is essential. The programme is generously supported by Croydon Council’s Family Hubs and powered by local volunteers who help ensure every mum is welcomed and supported.

Why It Matters

Postnatal depression affects around 1 in 10 new mothers in the UK, and mental health remains a leading cause of maternal death in the months after giving birth. But stigma, fear of judgment, and concerns about medication often prevent women from seeking help.

Breathe Melodies for Mums offers a hopeful, human alternative—one that celebrates connection, creativity, and the voices of women who might otherwise feel invisible.
