On Wednesday 12th October, Croydon Council’s Cabinet, led by new Executive Mayor Jason Perry, approved a trial of 9 new ‘Healthy School Street’ schemes across Croydon.
The trials will be installed outside the following schools:
- South Norwood Primary School
- Howard Primary School
- Gonville Academy
- Kenley Primary School & Kindergarten
- Park Hill Junior & Infants School
- Oasis Academy Shirley Park
- The Crescent Primary School & The BRIT School
- St Cyprian’s Greek Orthodox Primary Academy
- Good Shepherd Catholic Primary and Nursery School
These trial schemes will join 24 other schemes across the borough.
What actually are healthy school streets?
A School Street is a road outside a school with a temporary restriction on motorised traffic at school drop-off and pick-up times. The restriction applies to school traffic and through traffic and is designed to encourage children to walk to school.
In a marked difference from the borough’s previous administration, the new administration under Mayor Jason Perry consulted on all the schemes before implementing the trials, with 2 schemes not progressing.
Mayor Jason Perry said “Listening to local residents, schools, and the whole community has been an important priority. We have listened and will keep listening throughout the trial process to make sure the schemes are accomplishing their intended goals”
